Davis Ties School Record in Loss to Hampton
September 30, 2007HAMPTON, Va. -- Senior Danyel Davis tied the school record with 27 digs, but it was not enough to prevent Coppin State from dropping a heartbreaking 30-23, 26-30, 30-17, 22-30, 15-13 decision to Hampton in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play on Saturday.
Davis tied the previous record of 27 set by Sepiuta Tonga against Delaware State in 2001. She also had three kills, three blocks and a service ace in the match.
Coppin State forced a fifth, and deciding, game by winning game four 30-22.
Hampton jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the deciding game behind a pair of kills from Ese Ighedosa. A kill by Brittany Arvin and four Hampton hitting errors helped CSU trim the lead to 7-6.
The Pirates went on a 7-2 run to take a 14-8 lead and served for the match before the Eagles stormed back into the match. Shawda Wilkes began the charge with a kill and three straight Hampton hitting errors followed by a kill from Indira Laurencin cut the lead to 14-13. But Ighedosa ended the match with a kill handing the Eagles a disappointing defeat.
Hampton improved to 9-9 overall and 1-1 in the MEAC, while Coppin State fell to 1-14 on the season and 0-3 in conference play.
Ebonie Vincent led the Pirates with 30 kills, while Ighedosa added 12.
Laurencin was the lone CSU player to reach double figures in kills with 11. Arvin had eight kills and Kanishia Sheppard added four.
