Eagles End 45-Match Losing Streak to Morgan State
October 31, 2010BALTIMORE -- Ashley Saunders had 19 kills and Coppin State ended a 45-match losing streak to Morgan State with a 25-19, 26-25, 25-21, 27-25 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference victory over the Bears on Sunday at Hill Field House.
It marked the Eagles first win against Morgan State since a forfeit victory over the Bears on Sept. 15, 1990. The Eagles also defeated Morgan State 3-2 on Sept. 8, 1990 at a tri-match at American University.
On Friday, Coppin State defeated Hampton 3-1 which snapped a 36-match conference losing streak and the Eagles put a cap on the week by beating Morgan State on Sunday.
Christina Epps had nine kills and three blocks, while Yolanda Reid added eight kills, five blocks and three digs for the Eagles.
Coppin State (5-19, 2-6 MEAC) placed three players in double figures in digs led by Tyler Phillips who had 19. Vanity Massey had 14 digs and Haley Beechler added 13 for the Eagles.
Dominique Bozier had 13 kills and Erin Cox added 12 kills and seven digs for Morgan State.
The Eagles pulled away late to jump out to a 1-0 lead by claiming the first set.
Leading 19-18, the Eagles stretched the lead to 21-18 on a kill by Saunders and a Morgan State attack error.
Morgan State trimmed the lead to 21-19 on a Coppin State service error, but the Eagles scored the final four points of the set to take the win.
Morgan State rebounded to win the second set behind a strong closing run.
The Bears broke a 15-15 deadlock by outscoring Coppin State 10-1 to take the second set and even the match at 1-1.
Coppin State never trailed in the third set in going ahead in the match for good.
The Eagles jumped out to a 6-1 lead and cruised to a 25-21 victory and a 2-1 lead.
Coppin State had to rally in the fourth, and deciding, set to claim the victory.
Morgan State served for the match at 24-23, but a Bear attack error tied the score at 24-24.
Saunders put the Eagles in front 25-24 with a kill, but a Coppin State service error tied the set at 25-25.
Epps put the Eagles back in front with a kill and CSU clinched the match with a service ace from Saunders.
