Ruark Pitches Delaware State Past Coppin State
April 10, 2009DOVER, Del. -- Junior Brittney Ruark limited Coppin State to one hit in the first game and then combined with Andrea Waters to post a shutout in game two leading Delaware State to a sweep of the Eagles in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference doubleheader on Friday at the Hornets Nest.
Behind Ruark, the Hornets won the first game 3-0 and then beat the Eagles 15-0 in game two.
Ruark allowed only a fifth inning single by Coralys del Mar Rivera and struck out nine batters while pitching a complete game shutout in the opener.
Waters and JoJo Shields had RBI base hits for Delaware State and the Hornets other run scored via a CSU error.
Paige Arnold pitched a complete game for Coppin State and she allowed two earned runs and seven hits, while striking out four over six innings.
Delaware State took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning on an RBI groundout from Shields scoring Tawny Reeger who had doubled to lead off the inning.
The Hornets added a pair of runs in the bottom the fifth inning to pull away from the Eagles.
Courtney Taylor hit a one-out double and scored on a single by Waters to increase the lead to 2-0. Waters later scored on a Coppin State throwing error.
The second game was all Delaware State as the Hornets reached Arnold for nine runs and scored 14 in the first two innings.
Breanne Parr was 3-for-3 with four runs batted in, while Casey Beighly was 2-for-2 with two RBI.
The Eagles got base hits from Arnold, Jade Dudley, Candice Wright and del Mar Rivera in the second game.
Coppin State dropped to 4-18 overall and 1-5 in the MEAC, while Delaware State improved to 15-13 on the season and 4-1 in conference play.
The two teams will conclude the series on Saturday (April 11) with a single game beginning at 1 p.m. at the Hornets Nest.
