Hampton Beats Coppin State; Darko Wins Fourth Straight
April 10, 2009BALTIMORE -- Freshman Quincy Darko became just the third Coppin State player to post a victory against Hampton, but the Pirates emerged with a 5-1 victory over the Eagles in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play on Saturday at the Druid Hill Tennis Courts.
Darko defeated Marcelo Reda 7-5, 6-7 (1-7), 10-5 in No. 3 singles play to stretch his current winning streak to four straight.
"It is a notable achievement," said head coach Charles Spencer. "Hampton has an outstanding program and for Quincy to come in as a freshman and beat one of their players is significant. He is playing really well right now and he has a tenacity which allows him to prevail."
Viktor Lemberger dropped a heart-breaking decision to Edson Alves at No. 1 singles. Lemberger won the first set 7-5, but then lost the second set 6-4 and dropped the third set 10-8.
James Jeffreys also played well in a 6-3, 6-3 loss to Sung-Kwon Baek at No. 2 singles.
