WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Eugene Myatt tied his career high with 41 points and Howard ended Coppin State's four-game winning streak with an 81-74 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference victory over the Eagles on Monday in Burr Gymnasium.
Behind the hot shooting of Myatt, the Bison took a 42-25 lead into the intermission and then held off a late charge by the Eagles.
Howard (8-19, 5-8 MEAC) shot a blistering 66.7 percent from the floor in the first half and 59.0 percent for the game, while the Eagles were limited to 39.1 percent shooting.
Myatt finished the game 12-of-18 from the floor, including making 6-of-8 three-point attempts, and 11-of-12 from the free throw line. He scored 25 first-half points by making 7-of-9 shots and 6-of-8 three-point attempts.
Curtis White added 17 points and five rebounds for the Bison.
Coppin State (11-17, 8-6 MEAC) was led by senior Tywain McKee
who scored 28 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. He also added four steals and two assists.
, who returned after missing the previous two games due to illness, scored a career-high 18 points and Vince Goldsberry
added 10 points.
The Eagles held an early 10-9 lead before Myatt hit back-to-back three-point baskets during an 8-0 Howard run giving the Bison a 17-10 lead with 12:29 to play in the half.
A pair of free throws by Myatt upped the Howard lead to 21-12 before the Eagles rallied.
McKee scored five straight points to cut the Bison lead to 21-17 with 8:28 remaining in the first period.
The Eagles trailed 23-19 after a layup by Buckley before Myatt took over.
After White nailed a three-pointer, Myatt scored the next 14 points for the Bison giving Howard a 42-25 lead at the break.
Myatt finished the first half with as many points as the entire Coppin State team.
The Eagles fought their way back into the game in the second half, but Howard had an answer each time.
Coppin State cut the lead to 59-50 after a three-point basket by Goldsberry with 8:22 to play in the game, but Howard answered with a 6-0 run capped by a dunk by Paul Kirkpatrick.
McKee converted a three-point play with 1:30 remaining to cut the lead to 75-66, but Myatt made a pair of free throws on the other end for the Bison.
Howard made 8-of-9 free throw attempts down the stretch until Randy Hampton missed two attempts with eight seconds remaining.
