Harper, Buckley Lead Eagles Past Hornets

January 31, 2009
DOVER, Del. -- Michael Harper scored 21 points and Mike Buckley added a career-high 17 to lead Coppin State to a 72-65 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference victory over Delaware State on Saturday in Memorial Hall.

Harper reached double figures in scoring for the sixth-straight game and finished the contest 8-of-15 from the floor, including 5-of-9 from three-point territory. He also added three rebounds, three blocked shots and a steal.

Buckley notched his second straight double-figure scoring game and hit several key baskets down the stretch in helping the Eagles end a five-game losing streak to Delaware State. He finished the game 6-of-9 from the field and was a perfect 3-of-3 on his three-point attempts.

Coppin State (6-15, 4-4 MEAC) won for the third straight time overall and evened its conference record in the process.

The Eagles shot 55.3 percent from the floor, including 63.6 percent in the second half.

Delaware State (5-17, 3-4 MEAC) was led by Frisco Sandidge who scored 16 points, while Trevor Welcher had 15 for the Hornets.

With the Eagles clinging to a 56-54 lead with 4:24 to play in the game, Buckley took over.

He connected on a jumper to increase the lead to 58-54 and after a basket by Sandidge cut the lead to two points he drilled a three-pointer for a 61-56 lead with 2:54 to play.

Welcher answered with a three-pointer of his own, but Buckley once again answered the call as he knocked down a jumper in the lane and hit a three-pointer giving the Eagles a 66-59 lead with 1:34 left in the contest.

The Eagles then made six straight free throws, including four by Vince Goldsberry, to close out the game.

While Buckley helped CSU close the game, Harper got the Eagles off to a fast start.

He capped a 10-0 Coppin State run with a dunk and a three-point basket giving the Eagles a 17-5 lead with 12:54 to play in the first period.

The Hornets trimmed the margin to eight points before Harper knocked down another three-pointer increasing the Coppin State lead to 20-9 with 9:19 left.

After Delaware State climbed to within 24-21, Buckley then scored Coppin State's final seven points of the half giving the Eagles a 31-23 advantage at the intermission.
