Baird Finishes Second in Heptathlon at MEAC Outdoor Championships

BALTIMORE -- Led by the second-place finish by sophomore Natoya Baird in the heptathlon, Coppin State is currently in sixth place after the second day of competition at the 2007 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Hughes Stadium.
 
The Eagles have 19 points after two days of competition, while Maryland-Eastern Shore is currently first with 47 points. Norfolk State is second with 39 points followed by Hampton (35), North Carolina A&T (33) and Morgan State (28).
 
Baird held a slim lead over Cuquie Melville of Delaware State entering the 800 meters, which is the final event of the heptathlon, but Melville finished first in the 800 and overtook Baird for the top spot. Melville finished with 4,913 points, while Baird totaled 4,795 points during the seven events.
 
Deondrea Hall just missed scoring points for Coppin State as she placed ninth overall with 3,777 points and Telisa Dixon finished 13th with 3,510 points.
 
Ayana Riviere had a strong showing for Coppin State as she earned six points for the Eagles in two events. She posted a personal-best jump of 18-2.25 in finishing fifth in the long jump and later cleared 6-11.75 in the pole vault to earn a seventh-place finish.
 
Heneka Rolle earned three points for the Eagles in the shot put as she placed sixth with a throw of 42-1.50, while teammate Felicia Gray placed eighth with a 39-7.75 effort.
 
Gray earned the Eagles other point on the day by finishing eighth in the javelin with a throw of 100-1.
