BALTIMORE, Md. -- The Coppin State men's outdoor track and field team will vie for the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference championship beginning on Thursday (May 3) at Hughes Stadium on the campus of Morgan State.
The Eagles will be led by defending javelin champion Arlon Morrison, NCAA hurdle qualifer Steve Delice, indoor 800-meter champion Nigel Leonce and junior Anthony Littlejohn.
Morrison won the javelin throw at the 2006 Outdoor Championships and also placed seventh in the decathlon. He has the second ranked throw in the MEAC entering the conference championships.
Delice ran an NCAA-qualifying time of 52.49 in the 400 hurdles earlier this season at Morgan State and is one of three competitors in the field who has met the NCAA standard.
Leonce, who won back-to-back indoor 800 meter championships, finished second in the 2006 outdoor championships. He placed third in the 800 at the IC4A Championships and earned a berth into the NCAA East Regional where he placed fourth in his heat.
Littlejohn accumulated 13 points for the Eagles at last year's championship by placing third in the steeplechase, sixth in the 1500 and fifth in the 5000. He will compete in the 800, the 1500 and the steeplechase this year.
Brandon Miles, who finished eighth in the decathlon last season, will also compete in the long and triple jumps.
Shane Smith captured the indoor pole vault title and will attempt to add the outdoor title this week. He has competed in only one meet during the outdoor season, but still posted the top jump in the MEAC.
