PRINCESS ANNE, Md.
-- Coppin State rode the pitching of Will Grebenstein
and the hitting of David Hamlett
to a 6-2 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference victory over Maryland Eastern Shore on Sunday in the final of a three-game series at Hawks Stadium.
Grebenstein pitched 7.1 innings and allowed two runs, while Hamlett went 3-for-5 and drove in three runs.
The Eagles won two of three games in the series and improved to 7-2 against the Hawks on the year. Coppin State raised its record to 14-28 overall and 9-12 in the MEAC.
Mike Escanilla drove in two runs for Maryland Eastern Shore, which dropped to 8-38 overall and 4-17 in conference play with the loss.
Coppin State jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Cozart hit a one-out double and scored when Hamlett followed with a single.
The Eagles extended the lead to 2-0 when Cozart hit an RBI single that scored Kashangaki who had doubled.
Coppin State added two more runs in the top of the fifth inning. Kashangaki singled to start the inning and stole second base and Cozart followed with a walk. The Eagles executed a double steal and Kashangaki scored on a throwing error by the catcher.
Hamlett pushed the lead to 4-0 when Hamlett singled to score Cozart from third base.
UMES cut the lead to 4-2 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, but Coppin State responded with two runs in the top of the seventh inning on an RBI double by Hamlett and an RBI single by Godfrey.
