combined to throw a no-hitter, but Lehigh took advantage of three Coppin State errors in the seventh inning to score the only run of the game as the Mountain Hawks defeated the Eagles 1-0 on Saturday at Joe Cannon Stadium.
Joe Abeln led off the Lehigh seventh inning by reaching first base on a Coppin State fielding error. Abeln advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Connor Faust.
Taylor struck out Lance Kirschenbaum for the second out of the inning, but Mike Garzillo drew a two-out walk to keep the inning alive.
Abeln then stole third and scored when the catcher's throw got away from Nathan Pitts
. Garzillo advanced to second on the play and moved to third on Pitts' throwing error trying to retire him at second.
Taylor went eight innings and allowed just the one earned run with five walks and five strikeouts. Martinez worked a perfect ninth inning in relief of Taylor.
Lehigh (6-4) also received an outstanding pitching performance as Colin Gotzon and Nick Stephens combined to blank the Eagles. Gotzon allowed just three hits to go along with seven strikeouts in seven innings to pick up the victory, while Stephens allowed just one hit in two innings of relief to notch the save.
Coppin State (3-9) left seven men on base and sqaundered two opportunites to score.
The two teams will conclude the three-game series on Sunday with a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m. at Joe Cannon Stadium.
