Coppin State Clinches Third Straight Regular Season MEAC Championship
February 19, 2007ORANGEBURG, S.C.— The Coppin State women’s basketball team clinched its third straight regular season Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference championship by defeating South Carolina State 64-47 on Monday at the SHM Memorial Center.
The Eagles (19-6, 14-0 MEAC) won their 13th consecutive game overall, their 37th straight regular season conference game, and their 44th over a league opponent dating back to 2005.
Rashida Suber led CSU with her second straight 27 point performance by matching her career-high in field goals with 12. She also matched her season-high in rebounds with nine and made five of Coppin State’s nine steals. Shalamar Oakley also reached double digits with 14 points and led the team in assists with five.
Talia Sutton led the team in rebounds with 11 and Jennifer Martin came from the bench to grab eight, as the Eagles outrebounded the Bulldogs (7-19, 5-11 MEAC) 48-32.
Suber jump started the offense with seven unanswered points in the first two minutes of the contest. Ashley’s Dublin hit a jumper five minutes into the half to give South Carolina State its first lead of the game. Four lead changes later, Brittany Gillespie sunk a layup to give the Bulldogs a 16-13 advantage.
The Eagles held South Carolina State scoreless for the next nine minutes. Meanwhile, Suber scored another seven, Tanezia Harden and Danielle Anders each posted four, and Oakley notched two in CSU’s 16-point run.
The Bulldogs went on a six-point run to close the half and opened the second with a layup to come within five points. They got no closer the remainder of the game, as Oakley’s layup with under three-minutes to play gave Coppin State an 18-point lead.
Sophilia Hipps led South Carolina State with 16 points. Hipps also grabbed six rebounds, made three assists, and recorded a pair of steals. Janelle Moore led the team in rebounds with seven.
The Eagles shot 43.3 percent from the floor and held the Bulldogs to 33.9 percent. Both teams had trouble from the charity stripe however, as CSU shot 55.6 percent and SCSU shot 45.5 percent.
Coppin State returns home on Saturday (Feb. 24) to face Howard at 2 p.m. for homecoming at the Coppin Center.
