Eagles Selected Sixth in MEAC Preseason Volleyball Poll
August 06, 2010VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- The Coppin State volleyball team has been selected to finish sixth in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference preseason poll as voted upon by the league's head coaches and sports information directors.
The Eagles received a total of 113 points to place sixth in the Northern Division poll, while Maryland Eastern Shore received 20 first-place votes and 258 points to earn the top spot. Delaware State had two first-place votes and 198 points to finish second in the poll followed by Morgan State (166 pts), Howard (151 pts), Hampton (148 pts) and Coppin State.
Defending MEAC champion Florida A&M was the choice to capture the Southern Division title as the Rattlers earned 18 first-place votes and 251 points.
Gazelle d'Artois of Howard was selected as the Preseason Player of the Year.
The Eagles, under the direction of third-year head coach Romonzo Beans, posted a 1-29 overall record in 2009.
Coppin State returns two starters in 2010 in juniors Ashley Saunders and Tyler Phillips. Saunders averaged 2.19 kills and 1.47 digs per set last year, while Phillips averaged 1.10 digs per set.
The Eagles will open the 2010 season at the Western Carolina Tournament on Aug. 27.
