Morgan State Holds Off Coppin State 70-64
December 04, 2010BALTIMORE --Aric Brooks hit two key three-pointers and added a pair of free throws down the stretch leading Morgan State to a 70-64 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference victory over Coppin State on Saturday in Hill Field House.
After Tony Gallo put the Eagles in front with a layup at the 4:36 mark, Brooks connected on a three-pointer that gave Morgan State a 58-56 lead with 3:39 to play.
Gallo answered on the other end with a conventional three-point play that put Coppin State back in front 59-58 with 3:20 remaining.
DeWayne Jackson converted a layup and was fouled with 3:09 to play and after he made the free throw the Bears lead 61-59.
Gallo tied the game at 61-61 with a jumper with 2:40 to play, but Brooks put the Bears ahead to stay with a long three-pointer at the 1:42 mark of the second half.
He later added two free throws with 42 seconds to play with the Bears clinging to a two-point lead.
Brooks finished with 13 points, while Jackson led the Bears with a game-high 24 points. Justin Black also reached double figures with 10 points.
Akeem Ellis led Coppin State with 20 points and Gallo added 17 for the Eagles. Michael Harper added 11 points for CSU.
Coppin State (2-3, 0-1 MEAC) shot just 36.4 percent from the floor for the game, while Morgan State shot 40.7 percent from the field.
Morgan State improved to 3-4 overall and 1-0 in the MEAC.
The Eagles fell behind by 13 points early in the second half before staging a comeback.
Trailing by 51-42 with 9:47 to play the Eagles went on a 14-4 run to take a 56-55 lead with 4:36 to play. Ellis sparked the run with eight points.
Coppin State returns to action on Tuesday (Dec. 7) when it hosts Navy at 7:30 p.m. in the Physical Education Complex.
