Terps Down Coppin State 12-2

March 05, 2008
COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Maryland scored seven runs over the final four innings to pull away from Coppin State on its way to a 12-2 non-conference victory over the Eagles on Wednesday at Shipley Field.

Coppin State spotted the Terrapins an early 5-0 lead before mounting a comeback in the middle innings, but it was not enough to prevent the Eagles from dropping their ninth straight game.

Bill Rice, Chad Durakis and Gerry Spessard each had two hits for Maryland.

Oscar Santanlo banged out three hits and drove in a run to lead Coppin State, while Brandon Alexander added two runs and an RBI.

Mike Sufczynski picked up the victory for the Terrapins, while Darrell Downs took the loss for Coppin State.

Maryland jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning courtesy of three Coppin State errors.

Steve Braun walked to lead off the game and Rice followed with a base hit that moved Braun to third. Following a Rice steal, the Eagles committed their first error of the inning on a dropped fly ball to left which resulted in Braun scoring the first run of the game.

Maryland loaded the bases on a Coppin State throwing error and Mike Murphy brought home the second run of the game with a sacrifice fly.

The Terrapins once again loaded the bases and two runs came across the plate when the Eagles dropped a fly ball to center increasing the lead to 4-0.

Coppin State got on the board in the top of the third inning as Alexander singled to bring in Santanlo who had doubled to lead off the inning.

Harry Williams walked to begin the Eagle fourth inning and moved to second on a base hit by Patrick Regalado. Both runners moved up when Carlos Russell dropped down a sacrifice bunt.

Angel Recci was hit by a pitch to load the bases and Santalo brought in the Eagles second run with an RBI single, which trimmed the lead to 5-2.

Maryland scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth and added three more in the sixth inning to take a 10-2 lead.
