BALTIMORE, Md. – Madison Didion allowed just two hits and struck out a career-high 15 batters to lead the Coppin State softball team to a 1-0 victory over MEAC rival Howard University on Wednesday afternoon. The victory clinches a spot in the MEAC Tournament in Daytona Beach on May 10-12 for the Eagles (14-22, 10-8 MEAC) for the second-straight season.
A junior from Montesano, Wash., Didion struck out the side in each of the first three innings and fanned the first two batters of the fourth inning allowing just one hit over the span. Didion then struck out two more in both the fifth and sixth innings before getting a 1-2-3 seventh to seal the victory.
Coppin's lone run of the game came on an RBI triple by
Patricia Soria in the third inning, following a one-out double by
Megan Narvaez.
Fortunately for the Eagles, that was more than enough for Didion whose previous career-best for strikeouts was 12 back on March 27, 2018 in a 6-1 victory over Maryland Eastern Shore. This was the fifth-time this season that Didion reached double digits in strikeouts after recording no more than eight last season.
Narvaez had two of Coppin State's four hits with Soria and
Sydney Dombrowski recording the others.
Nicole Ullman also drew a pair of walks for the Eagles who return to action on Thursday, May 3 at Saint Peter's in a 3 pm doubleheader to close out the regular season.
