Softball Swept by Mount St. Mary’s in Midweek Doubleheader

BALTIMORE, Md. – The Coppin State softball team dropped a pair of non-conference games to Mount St. Mary's on Wednesday afternoon.  The Eagles, who dropped the opener, 2-1 in eight innings, and the nightcap, 7-3, now stand at 11-18 on the season.

Game one was a pitcher's duel as both teams went scoreless through the first seven innings.  Madison Didion ended up on the wrong side of the decision as she allowed two earned runs in the eighth inning while striking out 11 on five hits in 8.0 innings of work.  Amanda Berkley received the win for the Mountaineers, allowed one run on two hits.

The Mount scored their two runs on a two-run homer in the eighth by Morgan Alisauckas, who also had a big game two.  CSU rallied in its half of the eighth but left a pair of runners stranded allowing the Mount to take the win.  Haley Bravo led off the eighth with a double and following a single by Megan Narvaez, Patricia Soria reached on a fielder's choice which allowed Bravo to score.

The nightcap went in the Mount's favor early as they score a run in the first before adding a run in the fourth and two more in both the fifth and sixth innings off starting pitcher Dakota Gartrell.  Soria smashed a two-run single in the sixth to score Nicole Ullman and Camille Ochoa to make it a 6-2 game.

Mount was able to get a run back in the seventh but Coppin answered with a run in its final at bat on an RBI single by Sydney Dombrowski, but that was all it could muster.

Soria, Cayla Brown and Ochoa all collected two hits apiece.  Gartrell recorded her longest outing of the season, striking out three in the complete game loss.

On Deck: Coppin hosts MEAC rival Hampton for a pivotal three-game series on April 21-22.  Saturday's doubleheader is set for a 1 pm followed by a 12 pm single game on Sunday.
